Lately, the workshop has been filled with a new energy. We are moving beyond the expected, finding inspiration in the “drifters” of our coastline and the “thieves” of our local gardens. These aren’t just sculptures; they are stories captured in bronze and bone-white finishes.
The Art of the Hand-Sculpted Original
While our classic collections celebrate the power of the ocean, these newer pieces—like the recently completed Ahoy and The Protea Thief—represent a shift toward singular storytelling.
By moving away from casting and focusing on hand-sculpted originals, each piece carries a unique “fingerprint.” You can see it in the muscular tension of a baboon making off with a King Protea, or the delicate balance of a miniature sailboat perched atop a Southern Right Whale. These works are about contrast: the smooth, refined surface of the sculpture meeting the raw, weather-beaten history of reclaimed driftwood.
Finishing: The Breath of Life
A sculpture truly comes alive during the patina phase. We use a multi-layered finishing process to ensure that these pieces feel as ancient as the animals they represent.
The Bronze Patina: A labor-intensive layering of dark tones and hand-rubbed metallic pigments that gives the work the weight and luster of a foundry casting.
The Bone-White Aesthetic: A contemporary, minimalist finish that highlights anatomical detail and textures, especially when paired with the deep, earthy grains of natural wood.
